Warranty vs. Extended Warranty: What's the difference?
Should you pay for more protection? Understanding warranty coverage
Ever stood at the checkout counter holding your newly purchased smartphone and had the staff ever so sweetly ask, “Would you like to purchase an extended warranty to go with your smartphone for just Rs. 1749?” You hesitate, wondering if it’s beneficial for you or just a fad for the retailers to up their profits. Well, we have all been there. Deciding on warranties and extended warranties can be difficult if we don’t understand what and why are we purchasing them. So, let’s clear the mystery between warranty vs. extended warranty.
A standard warranty is usually a manufacturer’s promise to back the quality and authenticity of their product. You can think of it more as their vote of confidence in the products they have manufactured – at no extra cost to you. A standard warranty usually lasts from three months to one year for most electronic appliances; while some brand warranties may extend from two years to five years. So, what does a standard warranty cover? It majorly covers defects in the materials and workmanship of the product. For example, if your laptop’s keyboard stops functioning within a year of purchase due to a factory defect, you can get it replaced or repaired by the company free of charge.
